Cork airport is among Shannon & Dublin, the top Irish airports. Located approximately 5 miles south of Cork City, within the area known as Farmers Cross. Handling 3.25 million passengers in 2008, Cork is Republic of Ireland's second busiest airport in terms of passenger count. The airport itself is relatively important to Europe due to flights being based here from Aer Lingus, Aer Arann & Ryanair.
The approval from the Irish Government to have an airport built for the city of Cork was accepted in 1957, which was officially opened in 1961. In the 1980's the aiport saw growth with new services to London Gatwick, with Ryanair commencing services from Cork in 1987. From 2001 onwards, the roads were upgraded to dual carriageways plus upgrades to the aiport carried out to become a popular aiport.
