Kerry Weekend Trips
Kerry, aka the “kingdom”, located in the south-west of Ireland is as close as you’ll get to mythical Ireland, a Celtic kingdom of misty mountains, medieval ruins, glacial lakes, coastal peninsulas and sandy beaches. The infamous Ring of Kerry is not actually a ‘place’ to visit, it is a 179cm circuit of the Iveragh Peninsula, where the mountains meet the ocean. Across a bay, that is home to loads of dolphins, the Dingle Peninsula is home to one of the country’s highest concentration of ancient sites and Ireland’s highest peak, Mt. Brandon.
The South of Kerry is mountainous including Beara, Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas, and the north are smaller 'plains' area that extend to the Shannon estuary.
Driving from Tralee to Brandon guarantees breathtaking scenery but if you miss something, simply pop into The Brandon Art Gallery and view their collection of oil paintings depicting the Kerry Countryside. Conor Pass en route to Dingle is a a short walk away from Brandon, for more adventurous types, there is always the option of climbing Mount Brandon. In addition to beautiful natural sights, Kerry also boasts loads of coastal resorts, cycling trails, outstanding golf courses and ancient monuments galore.
The capital town of County Kerry is Tralee, home to the infamous 'Rose of Tralee' festival, held annually in August. The port of Tralee dates back to the 18th century. Killarney, the other town in Kerry, located in close proximity to the countryside, is the place to find shops and restaurants.
